Tell me what's going on — the technology challenges, the business context, the constraints. Don't worry about having a perfectly formed question.

I ask clarifying questions

I'll try to understand the root cause, not just the symptom. The problem you came in with is often different from the problem worth solving.

Honest assessment

I'll tell you what I think. If I can help, I'll describe how. If I can't, I'll tell you that too and point you somewhere more useful.
